William Denny Whigham William (Bill) Denny Whigham passed away in his home surrounded by his family on Thursday, March 12, 2015, at the age of 99. Funeral services will be Monday, March 16, 2015, at 600PM at Memorial Park Funeral Home, Memphis, TN, with Rev. Tim Olds officiating. Interment will be 1030AM Tuesday morning at Evergreen Cemetery in New Madrid, MO. He was born on August 17, 1915, in Louisville, GA. He graduated from Russell High School in Atlanta, GA. He later attended Georgia Institute of Technology, graduating in the Class of 1936 with a degree in Civil Engineering, and continued his avid support of Georgia Tech throughout his life. On February 7, 1939, he married Florrie Jean Foster of Griffin, GA. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II aboard USS Bristol, DD857, in the Pacific Theater. He was Mayor Pro-Tem of Hapeville, GA, prior to moving to Albany, GA, in 1949. For 36 years he was associated with S.J. Curry & Co. and its successor Alcon Associates, Inc. General Contractors, and was President of Alcon when he retired in 1985. He was a past president of the Georgia Utility Contractors Assn. and received the N.M. de Jarnel award by the Georgia Water and Pollution Control Assn. An original Founder of Happy House School for Handicapped Children in Albany, GA, he served on its board of directors for many years until its merger with Wesley Glen Ministry of the United Methodist Church. A charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Albany, GA, serving as Deacon, Elder, Trustee, and Elder Emeritus. In 2008, he and his wife were honored by the Southwest Georgia Care-Net in affiliation with the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving with the Family Caregiver of the Year Award. In 2009, the family moved to Piperton, TN, to live with his son and daughter-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sara and Sam Whigham, his wife of 72 years, Florrie Whigham, his sisters, Martha Whigham Sims and Eunice Whigham, his brothers Sam, Robert, and Nathan Whigham. He is survived by his daughter, Florrie Jean (Jeanie) Whigham and son and daughter-in-law William D. Whigham, Jr and Amelia Shibley Whigham, all of Piperton, TN; his granddaughters, Dr. Ashley Anderson (Wes) of Collierville, TN, and Dr. Amy Whigham of Winston Salem, NC; his great-grandchildren, Bailey and Reece Overby of Collierville, TN, and several nieces, nephews and many devoted caregivers. The family will receive friends at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, TN, on Sunday March 15, 2015, from 300PM-500PM and Monday, March 16, 2015, from 500PM-600PM. Family and friends are invited to visit in the family home on Sunday and Monday evenings. The family requests that memorials be made to either Covenant Presbyterian (Albany, GA) Five Years to Financial Freedom Fund or the Georgia Tech Foundation.
