Shirrell W. Smith Sr. Was born Sept. 5, 1920 in Ida Belle, Oklahoma to Ily Jane (Taylor) Smith Yeary and Jesse Walter Smith. He passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, MO at the age of 90 years, 10 months and 21 days. He was united in marriage to Geneva Louise Laferney on July 10, 1947 in Piggott, AR. She survives of the home. Preceding him in death, were his parents, Ily Jane (Taylor) Smith Yeary & Jesse Walter Smith; one son, Shirrell W. Smith Jr., three brothers, Lawrence, Buster & Clarence and three sisters Blanche, Gladys (Dude) & Ladys. He spent the majority of his adult life as a self-employed citizen in Portageville including the following businesses: The City Pig, Shirrell's Dollar Store, Phillips 66 Service Station, a commercial catfish pond and Town & Country Restaurant. He also was the newspaper carrier for the St. Louis Post Dispatch, St. Louis Globe, Memphis Press Semitar and Sikeston Standard for 35 years. As well as being an entrepreneur, he also farmed and became very well known as the King of BBQ in Portageville and surrounding areas. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a gunner during WWII. He was affiliated with Church of God, he was an ordained minister, held many revivals and even had a local television ministry for several years. He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Louise Smith of Portageville, MO, three sons; Garry (Lisa) Smith of Greenville, TX, Carlos (Reba) Pruitt of Jackson, MS & Larry (Faye) Pruitt of Bremerton, Washington, one daughter, Linda (John) Stevens of Portageville, MO, one brother, Clyde Reo Yeary of Portageville, MO, many grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and a host many other relatives and friends.
