Underwood

W as born on July 23, 1940 to Louis Ansel and Elsie Marie Smith Underwood in Hayward, MO. He went to with the Lord on January 17, 2017 at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau, MO. He attended Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Ark and later returned to Portageville to pursue his lifelong dream of being a farmer. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Portageville, where he served as Deacon, Sunday school teacher and sung in the choir. Phillip was also a former member of the Gideon International Bible and enjoyed passing the word of God anywhere he could.

H e married Carol Lorraine Clayton in February 1962 and had one son Kris Underwood. She preceded him in death in August of 1964. He later married  Carolyn Sue Bata on June 4, 1966 and had one daughter Karen Marberry.

H e was preceded in death by his parents Louis Ansel and Elsie Marie Smith Underwood and two brothers; Don and Ronnie Underwood both of Portageville, MO

H e leaves to remember his love, his wife of fifty one year's Carolyn Sue Bata Underwood of the home in Portageville; two children Kris (Donna) Underwood of Nesbit, MS and Karen (Paul) Marberry of Cape Girardeau, MO, one brother; Mark (Shelia) Underwood of Portageville, MO, three sisters; Carolyn Worley of Greenfield. TN, Joyce Vinyard of Houston, TX and Ann Medlin of Caruthersville, MO, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and a host of many other relatives and friends.
