Mildred Lee Coffee

Mildred Lee Coffee Sloas died on April 28, 2019, in Jacksonville, FL, where she lived her last three years after her health failed. She was 96. Born on June 5, 1922, to Mary Evaline (Robinson) and Leroy Coffee, Mildred spent all her independent life in the Missouri Bootheel. She graduated as class valedictorian from Marston High School and married Harold Andrew Sloas in 1941. They moved to New Madrid in 1946 where they spent the remaining years of their 69-year-old marriage together.

Mildred was the consummate wife, mother, community leader, and church-worker. When her children were growing up, she was heavily involved in all their activities. She sewed all her own and her daughter's clothes, she made all the curtains in her house, she kept her husband's books, she always kept a garden and had flowers growing in the yard. She also cooked three meals a day, complete with homemade bread. Mildred was a Girl Scout leader, a member of Eastern Star, and a tireless worker in the First United Methodist Church in New Madrid. For fun, she liked to play bridge—about the only time she sat down. When her children left home, she felt she should do something "useful," so she became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She worked as a pediatric nurse at the Ferguson Medical Group in Sikeston for 25 years. After retiring, she volunteered at the Sikeston Hospital for 30 more years.

June Mildred is predeceased by her parents, her devoted husband, Harold Sloas, and siblings Mary Louise Coffee, Doyle Sloas, Mack Sloas, Claydine Sloas, and Claudine Sloas. She is survived by her sister Wilma Morlan of New Madrid, her son Harold Andrew Sloas Jr. (Jean) of Winter Springs, FL, daughter Barbara Sloas Broach (Robert) of Orange Park, FL, five grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

Visitation is on May 6th from 1:00 to 2:00 at the First United Methodist Church in New Madrid with services at 2:00. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Delisle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
