Obituary

Genevie Black was born in rural Arkansas in 1924. She suffered polio during her childhood but overcame it, although it caused her to struggle physically her whole life. She married James Black in 1949 in Chicago, Il. They remained together for the next 26 years until James' death on Dec 27th 1975. They had one son, James Jr., who passed on March 27th, 1995 at age 47. She said then, there is no greater sorrow for a mother than to outlive her child. Genevie spent her life caring for others. Soon after her son moved out as an adult, his children James III and Terry moved in. Genevie raised her grandchildren as her own. Adopting them after her husband James' death in 1975. After her grandchildren moved out as adults, her brother Carl, suffering from lung cancer, and her mother Edith moved in. She would care for both of them until their deaths. Her mother lived until just before her 98th birthday. After retiring from full time work, Genevie continued to work part time, assisting handicapped children on the bus to and from school each day. While at the same time caring for her mother and brother at home. She spent her last few years in Denton Texas with her grandson Terry and his family. She fell ill from pneumonia and passed quietly in her sleep in the early morning hours of August 16th, 2008 at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her husband James Sr. and their only son James Jr. She is survived by her sister-in-law Marie Tribble, her brother Russ Shelton and her 4 grandsons: James III, Terry, Jonathan and Jeffrey Black and thier families, including 6 great grand children.
