Born on May 1, 1963, in Chicago, Illinois, to Velma Reid Smith and Harold Smith, David’s life journey was crafted by the landscapes and communities of both city and countryside, but above all, by the bonds of unwavering family love.

From an early age, David grew up alongside his siblings, learning values of hard work and commitment that would define his approach to life. Though his parents, Velma and Harold, as well as his brother Steven Smith and sister Brenda Wicks, preceded him in death, their spirits remained alive in the fond stories David shared, their memories woven into the stories he recounted with warmth and humor.

David dedicated many years of his life to serving his community as the trusted butcher at the local grocery store. To him, it was more than a job—it was a daily opportunity to care for his neighbors.
