Obituary

David William Milem
June 8, 1944 – October 29, 2025
Memphis, Tennessee / Portageville, Missouri

David William Milem, of Memphis, Tennessee, formerly of Portageville, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.

Born on June 8, 1944, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, David was the beloved son of Hubert Milem and Verena Recker Milem. After his mother's passing when he was just ten years old, David was lovingly raised by his stepmother, Ellen DeLisle Milem, who meant the world to him. David was an only child, yet his life was full of love and family.

David attended St. Eustachius Catholic School and later Christian Brothers College in Memphis, Tennessee, where he studied Civil Engineering. His career as a civil engineer and surveyor spanned decades, earning him respect and admiration throughout the field. A proud Vietnam Veteran, David served his country with honor as a US Navy Engineering Aide, Petty Officer Third Class.

David found peace and joy outdoors — whether surveying land, fishing, hunting, or simply walking the fields and woods he loved so much. His life was marked by humility, kindness, and quiet strength. He was always ready to lend a helping hand — and anyone who met him will remember his firm handshake and warm smile. Somewhere along the way, friends gave him the nickname "Smiley," a fitting reflection of his gentle, good-hearted nature.

He is survived by his devoted son, Paul Milem, and his four cherished grandchildren: Brooklynn (19), Ava (16), Myka (5), and PJ Milem (4).

David received numerous awards and certificates during his life, but his greatest accomplishment was being a wonderful father and role model.
