Obituary

David Lewis Maxwell, 77, of New Madrid, Missouri, passed away peacefully on August 25, 2026, at Bertrand Nursing Center following an extended illness.

Known for his quiet generosity, David was born on February 6, 1949, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, to Floyce and Emma Maxwell. He attended Immaculate Conception School in New Madrid before graduating from Tennessee Military Institute (TMI) in Sweetwater, Tennessee, in 1967. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Vietnam. He was also stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington, and in Germany before receiving his honorable discharge.

David continued his education at the University of Missouri-Rolla, graduating in 1979 with a degree in Mining Engineering. He worked for Unit Rig in Tucson, Arizona, before returning to Missouri. David later worked as a chemical engineer for Plastene Supply Company in Portageville, from which he retired in 2009.

David had a remarkable curiosity about the world and a deep love of learning. He was a voracious reader particularly of history and nonfiction, and was exceptionally well read. He seemed to know something about almost everything and could readily tell you about a particular time, place, country, or event anywhere in the world. He enjoyed fishing and had an extensive knowledge of guns and ammunition.

Those who knew David best will remember him not only for his intelligence and wide-ranging interests, but for his quiet and often understated generosity. He regularly sent cards and money to his siblings, nieces, nephews, and others who were in need. He gave without seeking recognition and was always willing to help in his own way.

For many years, David and his brother Larry shared a home and a life together in what they jokingly described as a "symbiotic" relationship. David took care of the bills, while Larry took care of the home and yard.

David is survived by his three brothers, Floyce Maxwell, Jr., Bill Maxwell (Erma), and Larry Maxwell; his sister, Mary Kathryn (Marty) Edmonds; sister-in-law Mary Ellen Maxwell; thirteen nieces and nephews; twenty-six great-nieces and great-nephews; and sixteen great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyce and Emma Maxwell, his older brother, Bobby Maxwell, and two baby brothers, Edwin and Paul.

David will be remembered for his generous spirit, his extraordinary curiosity, his love of knowledge, and the quiet ways he cared for the people around him.

Pallbearers: Jim Maxwell, Matt Maxwell, Paul Senne, Aaron Senne, Christopher Senne, Arlo Senne, Steve Riley and Robert Clay.

Memorial requested to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and School 605 Davis Street New Madrid MO 63869.
