Betty DiCarlo Betty DiCarlo passed away August 31, 2013 at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston, Missouri after an extended illness, she was 84 years old. Betty Jo Rice was born July 5, 1929 in Cooter Missouri to Charles Ercel and Gladys Marie Pollard Rice. Betty lived in several different localities during her childhood, including Blytheville and Elaine Arkansas, Mobile Alabama, and Gideon Missouri. On September 4, 1958 she married Henry F. DiCarlo in Steeville Missouri, she spent the following four years living with her husband, a United States Air Force Officer, in West Germany. Since moving to Portageville in 1963 with her husband and children, she has been a constant resident of the area. Betty was a substitute teacher at many of the local schools in the 1970's, and was a full time teacher at St. Eustachius Catholic School from the late 1970's until her retirement in 1990. She truly enjoyed her time as a teacher, and keeping up with the children she had taught, as they grew into adults. "Miss Betty" as she was known to her pupils, never missed a chance to visit with "her students" to reminisce about the good old days at S.E.S, or catch up with the latest events in their lives. Her health over the past several years made visits with former students more difficult and less regular, but it never diminished her desire to hear updates about their lives. Betty, was a member of St. Eustachius Catholic Church, and the St. Eustachius Ladies Sodality. She enjoyed cooking, reading, music, dancing, traveling and St. Louis Cardinal baseball games. Betty's main enjoyments in life were her family and friends, she spent countless hours praying for, worrying about, giving advice (solicited and otherwise) to, encouraging (as well as scolding), fussing over, and generally trying to help both. She will be sorely missed by members of either group who knew her well. Betty Rice was preceded in death by her parents C.E. and Gladys M. Rice, infant brother Billy Zane Rice, and a son Charles Brent DiCarlo. She is survived by her husband Henry "Hank" DiCarlo of the home, son John Hendley of Ocean Springs Mississippi, son Richard and daughter-in-law Deborah DiCarlo of Portageville, and a sister Jean Kappelmann of St. Ann Missouri. She is also survived by three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, six nieces and nephews, an aunt, numerous cousins, and many close friends and former students.
