Aubra R. Wrather, Junior was born February 15, 1919 in Portageville, Missouri to Lillian Clyde Wrather and A. Robert Wrather, Senior. When Aubra was six years old, his mother died. Three years later his father married Ruby Irene Pinner. Growing up outside of Portageville, Aubra broke horses and mules on his parents' farm. Later he met and married Annie Laurie Tipton in Caruthersville, Missouri on April 21, 1940. Aubra owned the Ford dealership until 1941. During World War II he moved to farming for the next five decades, retiring in 1992. Throughout that time he worked closely with the University of Missouri Delta Center on ways to improve farming techniques. Aubra was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Portageville School Board, Chairman of the Board at Farmers Bank of Portageville, part owner in the local cotton gin and also named "Farmer of the Year". For many years, you could find Aubra and Annie Laurie out dancing the foxtrot, waltz, swing or cha-cha. Aubra also enjoyed a variety of activities with his family including: waterskiing, snowskiing, and duck hunting. He even quit deer hunting at the appeal of his daughter after the Disney Bambi movie was released. Aubra was most known for his sense of humor, keeping family members, close friends, and the random passerby entertained. Aubra passed away Saturday February 21, 2009 at Southeast Hospital, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, six days after his 90th birthday. Preceding him in death were: his mother Lillian Clyde Hall Wrather, his stepmother Ruby Irene Pinner Wrather, and his father A. Robert Wrather, Sr.; his siblings Doyn Wrather, Glenna Wrather Turner, Lillian Wrather, and Reba Doris Wrather; and his sons, William Tipton Wrather and James Robert Wrather. He leaves many to cherish him in memory: his wife, Annie Laurie Wrather of Portageville, MO; his sons, A. Roy Wrather, III, with wife Brenda of Convington, TN, and Charles Benjamin Wrather of Moab, Utah; and daughter Rebecca Ann Wrather Horstkoetter, with her husband John of Anchorage, Alaska; his grandchildren , Deborah with husband Joseph Winberry, Linda with husband Kevin Childers, Stacey with husband Trey Nolen, Kelley with husband Gordon Proud, Anna Horstkoetter, David Horstkoetter, Paul Horstkoetter and Michael Horstkoetter; nine great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
